What type of Car is Lightning Mcqueen? The answer to that question is not as simple as it appears to be.
First of all, let us marvel at the absurdity of the movie cars. The crazy thing is that the US has literally built their entire country around the use of cars, but really what would cars even do without people to drive them? Cars are the essential 20th century tool, being both so incredibly important to modern civilization and still so useless without it. All that aside, let’s answer the question of what type of Car is Lightning Mcqueen.
Lightning Mcqueen is, apparently, a combination of multiple car brands and models, and what exact make and model Mcqueen is modeled after varies greatly depending on who you ask.

What Type of Car is Lightning Mcqueen ?
Some answer the question of what type of car is Lightning Mcqueen with a Corvette C1 from the 1950’s, if you are inclined to believe this wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning_McQueen (side note: It seems weird that Lightning has a first name of Montgomery. I mean I know plenty of people name their cars, but how often do you hear people naming their car Montgomery? I mean maybe a British car, but there is no reason to believe that Lightning is not based on an American make).
Deviant Art User 3DPhantom is pretty convinced that Lightning is a Dodge Viper, and included juxtaposed pictures to prove it:
Car built for racing
To the more knowledgable motor enthusiast, it appears that Lightning Mcqueen, above any make or model, is certainly a stock car built for racing above any particular retail car. It makes perfect sense logically, given that Lightning is a race car above all else, and there are several physical parts on Lightning that also support this hypothesis. These features include the short-track rear spoiler, huge wheels, and the striking lightning bolt insignia on Mcqueen’s side.
Combination of several different flashy and speedy cars
DRIVETRIBE (the website I pulled the details in the last paragraph from) also had quotes from Bob Pauley, one of the “Cars” production designers) and John Lasseter, the film’s writer and director (can’t imagine getting it more straight from the horse’s mouth than that) both claimed that it is a combination of several different flashy and speedy cars, mentioning in particular the Ford GT40, the victor in several Le Mans races against Ferrari, as well as Corvette. Lasseter also mentioned that traditional NASCAR cars are “relatively flat and not very interesting”.
NASCAR and Corvette
DRIVETIME’s Mike Fernie, the author of the aforementioned article, also spoke with _The Grand Tour_ Host James May, who substantiated the NASCAR and Corvette associations, along with identifying Mcqueen’s Windshield and Roofline as strikingly similar to a Porsche 911
In short, the answer to the question of “What type of Car is Lightning Mcqueen” both has an answer and doesn’t have an answer at the same time. To be fair, although Lightning Mcqueen did not appear out of thin air, I would definitely point out considering the fact that Lightning Mcqueen is an animated character, he really is in a category of his own. I think all Pixar animations are in a similar group, Including classics like Woody and Buzz Lightyear or Mike and Sully from Monsters, Inc. In other words, I believe that Lightning Mcqueen is in many ways his own type of car, and can also be based on any car that you see in him.
