Pyramids are some of the most amazing structures ever built by man. You might have asked yourself, what is the largest pyramid in the world? In this post, we will talk about some of the world’s largest pyramids, but we will only cover those that were built long ago. So let’s get into the list of the largest pyramids in the world.

Great Pyramid of Cholula

Located in Mexico, the Great Pyramid of Cholula is about 66 meters or 217 feet tall. When you first see, it looks like a hill with a church on top and then the pyramid. But the whole hill is the Pyramid of Cholula itself! First built around 300 B.C. by the Aztecs; it was first called the Quetzalcoatl Pyramid. Soon after, the Aztecs left it behind, and it was not discovered again until the Spanish arrived in the 1500s. Now it is a tourist destination and an amazing pyramid to visit when in Mexico.

Red Pyramid

Red Pyramid is an ancient structure located in Egypt. The pyramid is about 104 meters tall or about 342 feet tall. In modern times Red Pyramid gets its name from the red stone used in the construction. Let’s look at the history of the Red Pyramid. First built by the Egyptian king Snofru sometime between 2575 B.C. and 2551 B.C., the pyramid was named “Sneferu Shines” after the Pharaoh who started the project. Originally the pyramid was made of white limestone, but over time erosion has caused the color to change to red. This structure is open for tourism, and you can even go inside!

Bent Pyramid

The Bent Pyramid is another ancient structure located in Egypt. It stands at 105 meters or 344 feet. Bent Pyramid’s name comes from the fact that its top part is built at a different angle than the bottom part. Originally the Egyptians called it the “The Southern Shining One” the name was changed in modern times because of the structure’s shape. It was built around the same time as the Red Pyramid and by the same Pharaoh. Currently, it’s open, and you can visit.

Pyramid of Khafre

Another amazing Egyptian pyramid and is the second-largest in the world. This amazing structure is around 136 meters or 448 feet tall. The pyramid was built in 2570 B.C. for the Egyptian Pharaoh Khafre. It was meant to be his tombstone when he died. Originally, the color was white but changes color due to weather conditions in the dese over time. Pyramid of Khafre is open for the public to visit.

Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops Pyramid)

Pyramid of Khufu is the largest pyramid at 139 meters or 455 feet tall! It was built for King Khufu upon his death; it would serve as his tomb. The history of the Pyramid of Khufu is important to understand this tall structure. The pyramid was first built in 2325 B.C. for the Pharaoh Khufu. Over time many have tomb raiders have robbed the pyramid, so much of its ancient artifacts are gone. But you are still able to visit the largest pyramid in the world!
