Manhattan is one of the most famous cities in the world. It is known for many things including its large skyscrapers, its Statue Of Liberty, Times Square, and the World Trade Center. Manhattan is very diverse in its people and its buildings, and you can find something new every time you go there. In a city that has so much to see, many people begin to wonder what is the size of Manhattan?
Manhattan is 22.82 square miles. This is quite small for a city so well known and so densely populated. Many people think its a big place but it’s half the size of Disney World which is 40 square miles. It’s also half the size of San Francisco and pales in comparison to London’s size which is 607 square miles.
Manhattan’s population is about 1.665 million according to a census done in 2017. Washington D.C. is about 3 times bigger but only has a population half the size of Manhattan’s. That’s why Manhattan seems so big. It has so many people in such a small space.
Manhattan is one of the most densely populated cities and also one of the tallest. It’s hard not to notice all the giant buildings there. Many famous buildings are there as well as some of the tallest. The World Trade Center is a the fourth tallest building in the world and it’s exactly 1776 feet tall. The Central Park Tower and The Empire State Building are two other famous and tall buildings there.
Manhattan is also big because it connects to the whole world. It is one of the biggest business and commerce centers in the whole world. It has a Federal Reserve Bank, Wall Street, and The World Trade Center itself is a big hub for businesses. Business and entertainment flourish in Manhattan. Many museums and theaters are located these as well as TV stations.
Along with its huge population, it also attracts many tourists. 62.8 million people visited New York City in 2017 and most of those people head to Manhattan for a majority of their sight seeing. The amount of tourists along with the general population make the city feel jam packed. Many of these tourists enjoy going to the Statue of Liberty, the Trade Center, and riding the subway system.
Manhattan is not only what appears above ground. It has one of the most elaborate underground subway systems that can take you across the city in less than an hour. In 2016, 1.757 billion people rode the subway. The 191 street station in Manhattan is 180 feet below the ground. The NYC subway has 468 stations and it is the busiest subway station in the U.S.A. It has a length of 245 miles extending into the other 4 boroughs.
Manhattan is a small city if you look at it physically, But if you see what it has to offer and how much people it can contain you will realize it can actually be one of the biggest cities in the world. It has a population density that is greater than many countries, tall and unforgettable buildings, millions of tourists from across the world, and a complex subway system. All of this make Manhattan a giant city.
